Specialized trauma services and levels
Our trauma centers are designated by the Utah Department of Health's Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Preparedness.
Our designated trauma centers range from Level II to IV and all can provide resuscitative care to stabilize patients of all injury levels. If more advanced treatment is needed, we coordinate seamless transfers to a trauma center with greater capabilities.
As part of their trauma center status, many of our hospitals serve as an educational and clinical resource for local and regional trauma service providers, including physicians, nurses, EMS teams and other clinical personnel. We also offer educational programs about trauma prevention to keep our communities safe such as Stop the Bleed training.
Level II Trauma Centers
Our Level II Trauma Centers offer a higher level of care and are equipped to handle complex and severe injuries. Each center offers immediate surgical intervention, providing 24/7 access to healthcare providers in a range of advanced specialties, including trauma surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic traumatologists, heart surgeons and anesthesiologists.
Additionally, our centers include critical care units (ICUs), ensuring continuous monitoring and specialized care following treatment or surgery. Our trauma centers receive trauma patients directly, as well as transferring patients from other Utah hospitals throughout the communities we serve. Our Level II Trauma Centers include:
- Ogden Regional Medical Center in Ogden — Offers specialty orthopedic traumatology care to treat injuries to bones, joints, muscles and soft tissues.
- St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City
Level III Trauma Centers
Our Level III Trauma Centers are equipped to handle a wide range of moderate and serious trauma injuries, offering emergency care to promptly stabilize, resuscitate and treat most injuries. These centers have 24/7 access to emergency medicine physicians, as well as on-call general surgeons and specialists who are available to provide emergency surgery and critical care services if needed. Our Level III Trauma Centers include:
- Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful
- Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem
Level IV Trauma Centers
Our Level IV Trauma Centers provide initial care and advanced trauma life support, helping prevent serious complications from your injuries. They also may perform surgery and provide critical care services as needed. To earn a Level IV Trauma Center status, our trauma teams actively advocate trauma system development, enhanced emergency services and more efficient care. Our Level IV Trauma Centers include:
- Brigham City Community Hospital in Brigham City
